College Cheerleading - The Look

College Cheerleading - The Look

When making the transition from high school cheerleading to college game day cheerleading, there are a few things that are going to change. Many of you may have never even attended a college football game before cheering your opening game! Making the transition into a collegiate game day cheerleader can be simple; here are a few tips to make you the most collegiate cheerleader on the field.

  1. Pay Attention - The fans are there to watch the game, you are there to support the team and get the fans involved in a positive way! During the play make sure you are watching the game; as soon as the play is over be ready to get the crowd on their feet with a sideline. Timeouts are a great time to show off your team’s pyramids and stunts.
  2. Game day lipstick is a MUST - Peer down at the sidelines of any D1A football game, almost every single female cheerleader has on a nice bright lipstick. From far away your smile will look amazing.
  3. Volumize that hair - If you’re allowed, half up/half down with a nice curl or wave will look stunning. But, if you must wear your hair in a pony tail, try doing a poof-pony or a relaxed side part with a low pony. Always use hairspray, never have wet hair, don’t scrunch your hair unless it’s seriously curly, and curl and tease your pony tail for a soft beachy look.
  4. Bow placement - For a traditional look, your bow’s tails always need to be at the back of your head. This means your pony tail holder should never go on top of your head. Instead, gather your hair behind your head at about the same level as your eyes (give or take an 1-2 inches depending on head size).
  5. Good posture isn’t just for socialites - Pull your shoulders back and lift your chin a little so you are always giving your attention to the crowd. You’ll also seem more engaged in the game, like you’re ready for action!
  6. Pom finesse - Learning how to use your poms correctly sounds pretty easy, but in reality it’s kind of tough. So here are a few tips: Never let your poms drop below your waist; Hold the bar handle when in stunts; Do high V’s, punches, touch downs, claps above the head, ruffling at the waist… ALL while jumping up and down.
  7. Signs, signs, signs - Signs are a great way to get the crowd to yell what you want. Stand up straight with your shoulders back lift the sign sharply when you want the crowd to yell. It is also great to get up in simple stunts so everyone can see the sign better.

There are other ways to look like a collegiate cheerleader, but if you embrace a few of these tips, you will be heading in the right direction.
